Rocky Mount Officers Win Police Awards, Community Celebrates

The Rocky Mount Police Department in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, recently announced that Officer Brad Summerlin has been awarded the Gold medal as Police Officer of the Year in the 2024 Best of the Twin Counties Readers' Choice Awards. Officers Mike Ash and Josh Richardson received Silver medals in the same category.

The awards are based on nominations and votes from citizens, organized by The Rocky Mount Telegram. The three officers expressed their gratitude for the recognition. Officer Summerlin emphasized the award's significance for the entire team, stating, "It’s an incredible honor to be recognized... We’re dedicated to making a positive difference every day." Officer Ash highlighted the collective effort of the department, saying, "This recognition reflects the hard work of our entire department." Officer Richardson noted the trust the community places in them, adding, "Awards like this inspire us to push ourselves further."

Police Chief Robert Hassell commended the officers for their commitment and positive impact on the community. He remarked on their dedication to making Rocky Mount a safer place and expressed pride in having such outstanding officers.

Officer Summerlin has been with the Rocky Mount Police Department since March 24, 2003, and currently serves in Support Services. Officer Ash joined the department on June 1, 2021, as a patrol officer, while Officer Richardson has been with the department since August 27, 2007, currently serving in the Special Operations Division.
