During the upcoming Fire Prevention Week from October 6 to October 12, 2024, the Rocky Mount Fire Department emphasizes the importance of smoke alarms in home safety. The theme for this year is “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”

The fire department provides several key guidelines for smoke alarm safety:

1. **Install**: Smoke alarms should be placed in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area such as hallways, and on every level of the home, including the basement.

2. **Test**: Homeowners are advised to test smoke alarms at least once a month by pressing the test button.

3. **Replace**: All smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years or if they are not responsive during testing.
