Cornell hosts largest stem cell registry drive on campus
ITHACA, N.Y. — To expand access to life-saving stem cell transplants, Cornell hosted Big Red, Big Impact: A weeklong campaign inviting students, faculty and staff ages 18–35 to join the national stem cell registry through a simple 30-second cheek swab.
Organized in partnership with NMDP, the nonprofit that facilitates stem cell transplants nationwide, the initiative featured nine swabbing stations across campus, making it the largest event of its kind ever hosted by NMDP.
The campaign was inspired by Juan Uribe ’96, who is searching for a stem cell donor for his 15-year-old son, Max, who is facing bone marrow failure and a high risk of blood cancer.
A follow-up event, run by students and sponsored by NMDP, is scheduled for late April; those not in the Ithaca area can also join the registry by requesting a swabbing kit online.
